His ebony hued eyes peered at me between the thick blades of dry grass. I found myself to be scrutinized by a young and naive mind that could only draw wary from the source of instincts bred into his fragile frame, bound by precious wings delicately crafted with tiny delicate feathers. He had on his brow harsh white markings that furrowed in what I could only imagine to be a combination of fear and frustration at his plight, gaze fixed upon the camera I held within my hands. We had a mutual and entirely unspoken agreement : I would photograph him and allow him presence within my yard, and soon after the last shutter fell I would give him the peace and quiet he seemed to so desperately desire.

In this article I am going to show you how utilizing a diffuser in your work can dramatically alter the look and feel of the image you are creating. As photographers it is our job to see light, so I am going to highlight areas in a photograph on our subject that we need to be paying close attention to. It can be tempting to fall into a fix it later mindset or simply wave away the technical mis-steps by saying, “that just can’t be avoided” or “thats just the way it is”. However, if we slow down, pay attention to our subject and the lighting on it, we can come up with solutions to help us achieve the look we want without making excuses for a lack of proper execution. This in turn leaves us with a better skill-set for future assignments and, I believe, a sense of accomplishment. So lets get started!
